Portugal is a country in south-western Europe. It lies next to Spain along the west coast of the Iberian Peninsula, with a number of islands in the Atlantic Ocean such as The Azores and The Islands of Madeira (the Autonomous Portuguese Region), which also belong to Portugal.
The origin of the name Portugal comes from a settlement named Cale. In the days of the Romans there was a port there (Latin – Portus) which they called Portucale. This in time became Portugal.
In the past Portugal was a maritime power and a pioneer in the European age of discovery, ruling over considerable parts of Africa and South America and dominating trade between Europe and the Far East and India. Portuguese, the language of Portugal, is spoken also in the former colonies such as Brazil in South America, Angola in Africa and Macau in the Far East.
