The Pyrenees mountain range covers an area of 450 square kilometers, from the Atlantic Ocean in the west to the Mediterranean in the east. It acts as a natural border between France and Spain. An excursion in the Pyrenees brings you face to face with alpine scenery, lakes, waterfalls and cliffs – a breathtaking backdrop to the singular cultures that developed over the years under the auspices of the isolation amid the mountains.
The winding paths, high passes, and spectacular mountainside roads are one big natural amusement park for motorcycling enthusiasts.
Heading out of Barcelona with the bikes and the escorting vehicle. We will be riding towards the Costa Brava region and pass on the cliffs overlooking the shore. From there we will continue to the ancient town of Besalú, with the possibility of visiting one of Europe´s most ancient Mikve – the Jewish ritualistic baths.
In the Afternoon we will continue riding through a special mountain road, not marked in any map, towards the isolated village of Beget. After a short tour of the village we will head on to our accommodation, which is located nearby, in an ancient reformed farm house.
Driving pass the town La Seu d’Urgell, we will head up into the principality of Andorra for a few hours (shopping! Yay, shopping!). After spending a short time in the small mountain nation, we will leave Andorra and head towards the village Espot.
This day includes long hours of riding over winding mountainside roads. If time permits, we could ride up a challenging narrow path up to the cliffs overlooking the abandoned villages of Jou and Son.
We’ll spend the night at a hotel in Espot.
Our day will kick off with a short hike through the Aiguastortes National Park. This is one of the most beautiful parks in the Pyrenees and we will tour it on foot and with the park´s jeeps. We will reach altitudes of over 2000m above sea level and reach gorgeuos lagoons and glaciers, before heading back down to Espot.
This is where the real challenge awaits – riding through difficult winding roads, mountain passes, and plenty of turns! Some of the mountain passes reach over 2000m of altitude. We will pass through the beautiful scenery of Val d´Aran and over into France and the other syde of the Pyrenees. We will ride through several mountain passes, including the world renowned Col d´Aspin.
We will spend the night in Sainte-Marie-de-Campan
After breakfast we will go to witness one of the Pyrenees’ most unique natural phenomenons – Gavarnie’s glacial cirque and waterfall. The site itself is breath-taking and the roads leading there no less so. It is, without a doubt, a must-see! If time permits we could visit the summit of Bigorre, going up in a cable car to over 2800m to an overlooking vantage point over the whole Pyrenees.
Our next stop, after another gorgeous ride, will be Pont d’Espagne with its numerous waterfalls. From here we will head northwards and reach the ancient and beautiful town of Pau, where we will spend the night.
This day will present us with two options – the first will include an easy morning enjoying the many things Pau and its sites have to offer. This is not a bad option, considering the fact that the past few days were not easy at all. Another option is to drive up to Col de Soller, reaching several mountain passes, with many impressive views and challenging rides.
In any case, we will head out in the afternoon back towards the Spanish border, and will continue until reaching the medieval village of Torla, where we´ll enjoy a dinner in a nice restaurant and where we will spend the night.
In the morning we will go on a visit in Ordesa National Park and Monte Perdido – The Lost Mountain. This is one of Europe´s most famous parks. After our visit to the park we will carry on over a few winding roads, as well as some faster ones (no highways here, but you will be able to hit the gas a bit) towards the region of Alt Urgell. If you wish and time permits we can go on a visit to San Juan de la Peña Monestary (the visit is an excuse for the road leading tere).
The night will be spent nearby. Where exactly? It´s a surprise!
After heading out from the Alt Urgell region, we will ride over unmarked winding roads until reaching the amazing volcanic region of La Grrotxa. After visiting an ancient medievel village we could go on a short an easy hike towards the cliffs of La Garrotxa and Sal de Sallent waterfall (highly recommended!). From there we will make our way towards a short visit to the famous Montserrat mountain, before reaching back to Barcelona to return the Bikes.
